Helpful Hints

     Here are some very basic fine and gross motor developmental milestones . . .

16-24 months

  • Begins to jump and run.
  • Walks sideways and backwards.
  • Unzips, takes off socks, and manages a spoon.
  • Builds a 3-4 cube tower.

2 years

  • Bounces small ball and kicks large ball.
  • Jumps forward.
  • Walks backwards and stands on tip-toes.
  • Runs fairly well.
  • Turns doorknob and unscrews the lid of a jar.
  • Takes off shoes/socks.
  • Builds a 6-7 cube tower.
  • Holds pencil in hand instead of fist.

3 years

  • Rides a tricycle.
  • Jumps from bottom step and in place.
  • Walks on tip-toes and stands on 1 foot for 3 seconds.
  • Marches and kicks ball when rolled.
  • Walks up steps alternating feet.
  • Builds a 9 cube tower.
  • Cuts with scissors within ¼ inch of a line.
  • Unbuttons and unlaces.
  • Holds crayon with thumb, index and middle fingers.

4 years

  • Stands on 1 foot for 4-8 seconds.
  • Hops on 1 foot 4-9 times.
  • Walks downstairs 1foot per step.
  • Catches a large ball, and throws small ball overhand.
  • Adult like pencil grasp.
  • Cuts fairly accurately with scissors.
  • Traces/copies a cross.
  • Builds a 10 cube tower.

5 years

  • Stands on 1 foot for 8 seconds.
  • Skips and walks on heels.
  • Catches small ball with 2 hands.
  • Copies a triangle and square.
  • Draws a person with 4 parts.
  • Cuts along a straight line.
  • Dribbles a ball and throws overhand with direction.
